Privacy Policy for Urban Dictionary Lookup
Effective November 4, 2026
Urban Dictionary Lookup (“the app”) is made by Cool Cats Consulting (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and who it is shared with.
In short: the app has no accounts and never asks for your name. The words you look up are sent to Urban Dictionary to get their definitions. We use Google’s services for ads, usage statistics and crash reports, and RevenueCat to manage the ad-free subscription. We do not sell your personal information.
What the app collects and why
Words you look up
When you search for a word, ask for a random word, or open a bookmark, the app sends the word to Urban Dictionary to fetch its definitions and votes. Like any website, Urban Dictionary receives your device’s IP address with the request. The words you look up are also recorded in our usage statistics (see below).
Usage statistics (Google Analytics for Firebase)
To understand how the app is used and to improve it, the app records events such as the words you search for, use of the Random button and bookmarks, screens opened, settings changed, views of the ad-free offer, and your responses to the rating prompt. With these events, Google Analytics collects an app instance identifier, your device’s advertising ID, the device model, Android version, app version, language, and the country or region your device connects from.
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics)
If the app crashes, freezes or hits an unexpected error, a report is sent to us so we can fix it. It includes technical details of the error, a short log of what the app was doing beforehand, which can include words you looked up, the device model, Android version, app version, the time, and an installation identifier.
Update check
Each time the app starts, it asks our website, which is hosted on Google’s Firebase Hosting, for the oldest app version still supported. Like any website, it receives your device’s IP address with the request. The request carries nothing else about you.
Ads (Google AdMob)
The app is free and shows ads from Google AdMob: banners between definitions and a full-screen ad after several searches. To show and measure ads and to prevent fraud, Google collects your device’s advertising ID, IP address, device information and how you interact with ads. Ads may be personalised based on your interests where the law allows it and, where required, only with your consent.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent with Google’s consent form before ads are personalised. You can change your choice at any time from Privacy settings in the app’s menu.
If you subscribe to go ad-free, the app no longer requests ads.
Purchases (Google Play and RevenueCat)
The ad-free subscription is bought through Google Play, which handles your payment; we never see your card or payment details. RevenueCat receives the purchase record, together with an anonymous identifier the app creates, so that the app knows whether you are subscribed.
Feedback emails
If you use Leave Feedback, the app opens your own email app with a message to urbandictionarylookup.app@gmail.com. If you send it, we receive your email address and whatever you wrote. We use it only to read and reply to your feedback and to improve the app.
Stored only on your device
Your bookmarks, theme, search bar setting, the rating-prompt counts, your subscription status and subscription prices are saved on your device so the app remembers them. They are not sent to us, and they are removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
What the app does not collect
The app does not ask for your name, does not use your precise location, and does not access your contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
Legal bases (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
- Consent: personalised ads.
- Legitimate interests: fetching definitions, checking the app is still supported, usage statistics, crash reports, and showing non-personalised ads and preventing ad fraud, which keep the app working, improving and free.
- Performance of a contract: providing the ad-free subscription you bought.
Who receives your information
We share information only with the services that make the app work, each under its own privacy policy:
- Google (AdMob, Firebase and Google Play): Google Privacy Policy, and how Google uses information from apps that use its services
- RevenueCat: RevenueCat Privacy Policy
- Urban Dictionary: Urban Dictionary Privacy Policy
These providers may process information outside your country, including in the United States. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long information is kept
Usage statistics and crash reports are kept only as long as needed to understand and fix the app, within the retention limits set in Firebase. Feedback emails are kept as long as needed to deal with them, and deleted on request. Ad and purchase data are kept by Google and RevenueCat under their own policies.
Your choices and rights
- You can reset or delete your advertising ID, or opt out of personalised ads, in your device’s settings.
- In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, you can change your ad consent at any time from Privacy settings in the app’s menu.
- You can stop all of the app’s collection by uninstalling it, which also removes the data stored on your device.
- Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, Canada’s PIPEDA or California law), you may have the right to access, correct or delete your personal information, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent. To make a request, email us at the address below. You also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
The app shows content from Urban Dictionary, which often contains explicit language. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
